Your visit begins at the Ninja Residence (Ninja Yashiki), a Traditional Japanese house that, at first sight, appears normal but hides ingenious tricks and cleverly hidden devices. Here, you will see a member of the staff dressed as a ninja demonstrating and explaining how ninjas utilized secret mechanisms within the house, giving you a clear sense of how ninjas responded quickly and intelligently when faced with danger.
The museum also displays a wide range of authentic weapons and tools that were used in the past. As you view these historical items up close while listening to the local guide’s introduction, you may find that although they look modest at first glance, their real functions are far more surprising than you would expect.
After learning about the history and tricks of ninjas, it’s time to practice and become one yourself!
We will head to ‘Bansenshukai,’ a facility where you can experience authentic ninja training.
First, you will enjoy lunch at a restaurant with a calm, refined atmosphere where you will enjoy an Iga beef set meal. The highlights of this meal include premium Iga beef paired with locally sourced vegetables and deliciously chewy rice cooked in a traditional clay pot.
After lunch, it’s time for the highlight: ninja training.
In this session, you’ll learn techniques recorded in the Bansenshukai, an authentic historical ninja manual. After changing into training attire, an English-speaking ninja will guide you step by step, starting with ninshin (the basic ninja mindset and discipline), hand signs, and simple set phrases, before you move into the main training area for the full program.
During the training, “night watch” guards will patrol the area. You’ll slip through the darkness like a shadow, putting your new skills to the test as you navigate different corners of the training space, an immersive stealth challenge with plenty of thrills.
About Nagatani-en
Nagatanien is a popular kiln with more than 100 years of history in Iga, Mie prefecture. Their 16-storied climbing kiln is a registered tangible cultural property. Nagatanien sells a variety of earthen wares, cooking utensils, plates and mugs produced at their factory. Their most popular product is ‘Kamadosan’ , which is the donabe ware which users do not need to control the fire during the cooking and which does not create the boiling over, either. Persona-size Donabe wares such as Donabe Egg Makers, beer mugs and sake cups are also well-sold there. All Nagatanien’s products are made by their craftsmen’s hands. You may find your favorite earthen ware there.
Characteristics of Iga-yaki
Four million years ago, the Iga region lay at the bottom of Lake Biwa. And even today, earthenware pots are made from the precious clay of the Ancient Lake Biwa Strata. The Ancient Lake Biwa Strata contains fossils of microorganisms from that time. When pottery made from this clay is fired in a kiln, the fossil traces burn away, creating the ceramics with many tiny air pockets. This highly porous pottery contains a great deal of air, which gives it excellent heat-retention properties. The pot itself retains heat well, allowing ingredients to cook slowly and thoroughly all the way through while preserving their natural flavors and producing delicious results. In addition, it generates the same far-infrared effect as charcoal fire. For generations, it has been favored by professional chefs as a versatile cooking vessel suitable for simmering, grilling, steaming, and roasting. Nowadays, it has been widely recognized by overseas users.
