View the 500-year-old puppet theater at the Awaji Puppet Theater and take a look backstage (75 minutes)
Awaji Puppetry, which has been performed on Awaji Island, for 500 years since the Edo period, is not only a local performing art of Awaji, but has also played a major role in the history of Japanese theater. The performers of Awaji Puppet Theater specialize in period pieces, and perform Awaji-style productions such as quick costume changes, prop exchanges, and costume piles that are easy to enjoy.
Many of the plays retain the original atmosphere of puppet theater, and the female performers, which are rare to see in traditional Japanese theater, make the performance even better.
